I walked into Fitz’s 8th grade English class with my new black binder, sharpened pencils, and a hundred sheets of paper in hand. Little did I know, that would be the only day I would bring it to class. In a room new to everyone of it’s occupants, one immersed in technology, I learned my strengths and weaknesses of writing. I used to hate writing with a passion, finding any excuse to not do it. This year I have taken a different approach, write until you love it. That was very hard to do, and still is. I have not conquered writing, but one never will because of the expansive theories and topics to write about. I have grown as a writer and have realized the importance of being “good” at writing. It will assist you in applying to schools, both high school and college. In every profession, you need to write, either its a report on fincises or a debrief paper. My favorite things about the way Fitz present writing are, his use of rubrics, the many different forms of writing, the variety of the assignments, the books and short stories we have read, the enhancement of the curriculum by the use technology, and the opportunities that are given to write.
I am a huge fan of the use of rubrics in writing. If every single English teacher I have had, used rubrics, I would have started to love writing much, much sooner. The reason that I love the rubrics is that they tell you what to write. It is quite hard to get a bad grade on an assignment that involves a rubric. Another reason is that they give an example of what the “chunk” of writing should look like. They also give help to a budding writer that happens to have the occasional brain block.
Fitz never gives the same assignment twice. The was only one time that fitz has assigned the same work more than once in a week, and that is right now.One day, its reading a book in The Odyssey, the next writing an analysis on that book. My favorite assignment that Fitz has given this year is creating the weebly.com site for our mid-year exam. Weebly is so easy to use and is very beginner friendly. It is important to use different techniques of writing to get your point across. Fitz, teaches us everyday on how to become a better writer and reader. With all of the different assignments, like paragraphs, analyses, and podcasts, it is very hard to do to of the major assignments in one week. When teaching eighth grade boys it is important to constantly switch up the given assignments. Fitz does an amazing job in doing this. With me at least, I get really bored when the same assignment is given 5 days in a row.
The books and short stories that we have read this year are great. We have read Through the Tunnel, The Most Dangerous Game, and the age old epic The Odyssey. I love all of the books and short stories that we have read so far this year. My favorite is The Odyssey, which we are reading right now. Fitz has said, and I’m sure that he will say it again, you not a man if you haven’t read The Odyssey. In Through the Tunnel, a young boy risks his life to prove to himself that he can do anything that he puts his mind to. In The Most Dangerous Game, A world famous big game hunter has the tables turned on him. The only way to become a better writer is to write. The only way to become a better reader is to read.
The use of technology when incorporated with the curriculum is a wonderful thing to assist in learning. Having 17 iPads, 4 iMacs, a 60” Hi-def television, and a apple tv, might seem some what extensive, but it suits our need perfectly. Also with schoology.com, a site where teachers can assign homework, post links, speak to his or hers students vi discussion boards is a brand new technology. The one thing that I would change is the conversion from windows to mac is quite difficult.
I hope to read more and grow as a reader to improve my writing and increase my vocabulary. The only way to become a better reader is to add to the number of books you read and to read different styles and genres of book. My favorite book that I have read is between American Sniper, and Fearless, both stories of now deceased United States Navy Special Warfare Command Development Group. ( Also known as SEAL Team 6) I want to become a great writer because it will help me get into better schools, including high schools and colleges. It is important as an everyday skill, and is crucial in every line of work. I want to be a awesome blogger and portfolio curator. Writing on different platforms can increase the number of people that see and read your site. On blogger, we all have blogs about one or more things that we passionate about.
